The enthusiasm from all over the globe for this project has been great! We had some press from Treehugger earlier this month that generated a good chunk of traffic. In response, I've uploaded the documentary in five separate chapters for those who would rather experience the film in smaller doses. If you're okay with viewing the entire 18 minutes in one sitting you can watch it here. If you're more into the chapters (on average 3-5 min segments) scroll down. Thanks to Marcia Caines of Cluster magazine in Italy for covering our story and to Larry Bafia for making the introduction.

Chapter One - Introduction

For those of you who don't have the time to watch the whole film in one sitting, I've broken the documentary up into five little bite size chapters. Chapter Two - The Image of House

Chapter 2 includes an interview with the two designers and a walk through of the ground floor of their home. Housing it seems has become more and more about lifestyle marketing than actual smart design. Choice it seems is plenty if you buy into the glossy stock photos of pretty people sipping lattes with their pure white teeth and fashionable clothes. But if you're not into what the developers are offering it's a different story.

Chapter Three - Angel Investors

Having the will to build your own home is not enough. Like all things in this world you need capital and for first time home buyers finding the financing can be tricky. Thankfully for Pete and Suzanne they had the trust and support of their parents to lend a hand.

Chapter Four - A Personal Note

This chapter includes a walk through of the 2nd floor highlighting the bridge, a key feature of the double height space and circulation in the home. It also includes a candid interview with Suzanne in which she reveals what inspired them to take the plunge and build their dream home.

Chapter Five - Building Relationships

In the final chapter you'll get to see the master suite and the roof garden, as well as, the first addition to Pete and Suzanne's new home.

Hello and thanks for stopping by! I'm excited to see the number of people interested in this project by Pete and Suzanne. I'm a big fan of what they have done so I hope you stick around to watch the film.

Thanks to Graham and Lloyd at Treehugger for the post and directing you folks to my corner of the web. Over the next few days I'll post a high rez version for those with the bandwidth. I'm also thinking of breaking the film up into chapters for those of you who want to get the low down on the story, but would rather consume it in bite size amounts - so let me know if you'd rather see it this way.

Unsatisfied with what the housing market had to offer, Pete and Suzanne set off to transform a small urban back lot into a sensitive house that questions how we deal with our environment by challenging our conventional definition of “home”.

Through a combination of interview footage, animation and photography, laneway documents the house of these two young designers, while examining their relationship with design and ultimately, one another.

About the Filmmaker:

Casey Kwan is a designer and filmmaker living in Vancouver, Canada. He works in animation as a designer, cg supervisor and teacher. Laneway is his first documentary which has been funded by the generous support of Canada Council for the Arts.

What is Laneway?

Laneway is a short documentary funded by Canada Council and produced by TWIXT Media Productions. Shot in the summer of 2003, the film focuses on a small house built in a back lane of a residential neighbourhood in downtown Toronto. The building's site was originally used as a garage for a small landscaping company which two young emerging architects have transformed into a unique home.
